I've only used it outgoing, and have but one complaint (aside from the
obnoxious icon): the incoming window has no cursor, so I have no
indication as to whether or not the other party has paused at the end
of a line, or issued a couple of returns (I've only used talk with one
other person, and we "yield the floor" by sending two blank lines).
Once the incoming window is full, I can tell by the fact that the screen
scrolls upward that a return has been sent; but until that time, I have
to resort to guesswork.

Subject: Caution: Possible IVC problem
The instructions for installing IVC 1.0 tell you to unzip the contents of
WINSYS.ZIP into the \windows\system directory.
CAUTION: This *may* be a Very Bad Thing.
The files in the archive are not necessarily the most recent versions
available. On my system the file THREED.VBX has a date stamp of 7/16/93, but
the file in the WINSYS archive is dated 4/28/93 (yes, the files differed in
size as well).
I don't want to even think about how completely unrelated software might have
begun to fail because some support file was replaced with an out of date
version. A SETUP.EXE is really needed to prevent this sort of thing from
happening.

I don't know what causes or fixes it, but it happened to me when I tried to
use the current revision. I am using Chameleon tcp/ip and the problem seems to
have gone away now that I have switched to the most recent beta of Trumpet.

Well, you get the 32-bit disk cache and 32-bit FAT filesystem driver;
they are supposed to improve performance, but I have not run any benchmarks.
You get the VxD Microsoft Remote Access Server client, but that also might
be uninteresting if you are not into networking. However, Microsoft has
a (very cheap) single session RAS server for WfWG, so you could create
a two machine network running over a serial line (not very much fun, if
you ask me...)
Then there is the Microsoft fax software, which allows you send
(and receive??) faxes using a fax modem.

Where did you get that piece of information? We have been told by
Microsoft that Windows 3.11 is really just a driver update, and
specifically does not contain any fancy WfWG features, including
the enhanced File Manager. Of course we are in Europe, and Microsoft
might be doing things differently in the USA...

It would better for some one who wants to release there winsock

Be advised - Windows 3.11 >>>> IS NOT <<<< w4wg 3.11 without the net cards.
Deeper than the cosmetic changes to file manager there are many internal
changes.
The 32-bit Disk Access you have been talking about is NOT the physical path
between the Drive and CPU. It is the path within the system AFTER receipt
from the controller. The apparent speed up is do to the fact that when
enabled Windows (for workgroups) does not have to do internal mode switching
(real/enhanced) to move disk data around. The data is received in Extended
memory and moved to the apps through extended memory, all directly under the
control of windows. 32-bit File access when enabled sits between the
receiver and the app. It's nothing more than a 32-bit version of Smartdrv
with the very significant feature of not taking up any DOS low memory.
If you have a fast SCSI controller you can put Smartdrv in your Config.sys
with the /double_buffer option. This will allow you to turn on 32-bit
FILE Access. This alone may be worth upgradeing to wfwg 3.11.

Hi Shamus,
I have a similar machine and it works with no problem. I assume that you are
using the Trumpet Winsock with a direct TCP/IP connection. Winsock.dll should
be in the same directory as Tcpman.exe, and in your path.
First, check to make sure that you have the proper packet driver loaded and
_working_. Ditto for wnpkt. Usually, these drivers give nice informative
messages with no errors when you load them in. This is probably the most
common reason for "can't load TCP" errors.
Once you have the drivers loaded, and start TCPMAN for the first time, you
will probably get errors because it is not configured. Under File/Setup,
enter in all your pertinent information. Then restart TCPMAN. If all goes
well, TCPMAN will display information about your network connection. Check to
make sure the numbers are correct.
If you get this far, try pinging a host. When all is working, Mosaic will
automatically start up TCPMAN by itself.
I hope this helps. Good luck! If you need additional help, contact me by
email.
